I was fascinated by these horses, they roam wild in and around Kaapsehoop in South Africa. We arrived there at around 10am in the morning and the horses were still grazing, about 30 minutes later, all the horses in the town started heading somewhere. I had no idea where they were going, so I decided to follow them. To my surprise they all went inside an old abandoned building. Inside they relaxed and cleaned themselves and you could see that they were taking a break from their busy schedules.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in a small town in the Highveld of South Africa called Kaapschehoop. It is a town that was originally created as a mining town. However after no gold was found, the town turned purely in to a tourist attraction, for its old buildings and wild horses.

Time

The horses were walking around the town for most of the morning, until the temperature started rising. Suddenly all of the horses made off into a certain direction. This made me really curious. I wanted to see where they all were going. To my surprise they all went in to a really old building at the edge of town to hide from the sun. I followed them in to the building with only my camera. That is when I took this photograph of this young horse resting near a window. It was around 10:39 am on the 28th of December 2017.

Lighting

I am a self taught photographer, so I learn about lighting with each photograph that I take. I prefer to only use natural light, but in the case of this photo, I had to use my flash, as the building was dark inside.

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS 750D with a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens and the built in flash on my camera. I personally enjoy using as little equipment as possible.

Inspiration

I was fascinated by these wild horses. Until a few days prior to visiting Kaapschehoop, I had no idea there were wild horses, or that it was such a beautiful town. When I got there, all I wanted to do was to capture the whole trip on my camera, so I could remember it and share it with the world. I wanted to do nothing other than photographing everything in that magnificent little town.

Editing

There are so many people photographing wildlife and nature, so I process all my photos. I try and give them a unique touch. In the case of this photo, I cropped out the horses on the edges of the photo. I also played a bit with the colours and lighting to bring out the sun shining through the window on to this horse. The last bit of processing was fixing up the eye, that reflects my flash.

In my camera bag

I always carry my my Canon 70-300mm zoom lens with me. I prefer zoom lenses as my photography trips usually involve me walking. Getting close to wild animals or quickly moving away from them can be an issue on foot. So being able to zoom in and out makes it a lot easier for me. Secondly I have my Canon EOS 750D body. This is currently the only body I have and I love it. I will always keep it, even after getting a better body. Third item in my bag is my Canon 100mm Macro Lens. This lens has brought me so much joy. It is the best lens I have used for macro photography. The auto focus is fast, so you are able to get beautiful photos of insects as they are moving between plants or anything else. Lastly I have a Canon 18-55mm Lens. I sometime use it for landscape photos. It is quite sad, but this is the lens I use the most seldom.

Feedback

The best advice I can give is always be aware of your surroundings. Wild animals cannot really be asked to pose and you have to work around whatever the weather is like on the day. So always have your eyes open. You might not get any nice photos for the whole day, but being aware of what is going on around you, and having a bit of curiosity, you will stumble on to something and in that instant you have to be ready to take the photo. That instant can turn a whole day of terrible photos in to a successful day where you captures something amazing.
