Location
This photo is part of the Johnston Canyon Ice Walk, Banff, Canada in March 2017.Time
From memory, this photo was taken mid-morning.Lighting
It was a fairly clear sunny day about mid-morning. I found so many shots almost looked black and white with all the snow and the deep grey green of the tree foliage.Equipment
Nikon Coolpix P 500 - handheld with no special lens, tripod of flash. To be honest, it was point and shoot as I was on a guided walk and it was quite fast-paced.Inspiration
I was in awe of the beauty of Canada in snow. I'd only ever been in snow once or twice in my whole life. Canada was the first time I was in falling snow (the snow was falling in this shot). All through the Rockies, it looked magical, so I took as many photos as I could.Editing
I cannot remember if I tweaked this particular photo. I have Nikon software that came with the camera. I don't tend to make many adjustments, at most I sharpen images and tweak the contrast and brightness. In my camera bag
Just my camera but I recently bought a tripod that I've hardly used. I'm also learning more about using my camera in manual mode.Feedback
If you can, use a tripod and know how to use the manual settings of your camera. Practice in your local area at all times of days and weather, so you know how to get the best shots. I'll take several shots of the same scene varying the settings a little. A friend, who is a amatuer photographer, recommends underexposing just a little - I have found this works quite well. I know a lot of people recommend dawn and dusk as the best times, but if you're travelling this isn't always possible. And don't worry if it's not a clear day, I have had some great shots in light rain, even a drop or two on the lens and mist surrounding me, to give the photograph a little mystery.
