Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken on the island Årø in Denmark.Time
This was taken at dusk on the 2nd January, at around 15:30.Lighting
As it was dusk and the sunset was behind the lighthouse, I had to bracket the photos as the foreground was very underexposed. Here a tripod would have really helped, but not having one at hand, I just did it handheld. To keep the exposure time low I widened the aperture to 6.3 and put the ISO up to 800 (anything higher and I find with the 700D it gets extremely grainy). The foreground was still underexposed, but as I was with some people I didn't have the time to try multiple shots, and I could fix this somewhat with postprocessing.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 700D with a Canon EF-S 18-135mm lens plus UV filter. It's currently my only camera. I would have liked to have a tripod with me but I didn't take it on the ferry.Inspiration
I have a bit of a thing for lighthouses, and what better backdrop than a beautiful Danish sunset. Every trip I do is another photo opportunity. The quaint thatched roof houses and old boatyards around just got me in a real Baltic feeling.Editing
I combined three bracketed shots in Photomatix, as I find it has many more options and effects than lightroom for combining images. It also included some noise reduction. I was really happy with the result and didn't edit further in lightroom. However, now that my postprocessing skills are better, I'd probably have more of a play-around in Lightroom or Nik Color Efex.In my camera bag
I have a large tripod that only comes with me sometimes, and a mini tripod that fits into the camera bag front pocket. I have a microfaser towel for cleaning the lenses, and a remote. The two lenses I use are my 18-135mm and 55-250mm. And always a few spare SD cards!Feedback
Bring a tripod! And perhaps a graduated ND filter to balance out the highlights. If you get to the location early you can wait for the perfect light, instead of having to hurry along with a group of people who need to catch a Ferry back for dinner.
