Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of several eagle pictures I took at an old hatchery in Ketchikan, Alaska. Eagles were present like sea gulls at an ocean beach. The salmon were running and it was lunchtime. These eagles were perched everywhere, trees, poles, fence posts, etc...

Time

It was about noon. We had a tour of the abandoned logging mill where a tribal member of the area was carving a totem pole. We walked around the property which is now a local park and the old hatchery was on the site.

Lighting

It was an overcast day but the lighting was bright.

Equipment

The camera is a Canon 5DSr and a Canon 100-400mm L lens with a polarizing filter.

Inspiration

I took several of this particular eagle since he was perched and very still and did not mind me being fairly close. I zoomed in close enough to get only part of his face because his eye was so clear and striking.

Editing

I did a little post processing by enhancing the yellow beak and white feathers

In my camera bag

I carry a backpack case with my Canon 5DSr, a Canon 24-70mm L lens, a Canon 100-400mm L lens, a Canon 50mm f1.2 L lens, a Canon Speedlite 580EX ll flash and polarizing filters for each lens.

Feedback

Have the best camera and lenses you can afford first and foremost and then have the opportunity to get to places where taking photographs like these are pretty easy. In January and February in northern Utah eagles migrate through the area and feed at several areas around the Great Salt Lake. I have seated myself for hours to get two or three good eagle shots where in Alaska it was simple to get great shots.
