This photo was taken in my dining room on the table. My daughter gave me this orchid for Mother's Day and given my aptitude with plants I thought I'd take a photo so when the orchids dies (inevitably all my flowering plants die probably from too much love and care), I'd have a great memory of it.Time
I am an early riser (5 to 6 a.m.), and most of my shooting occurs in the early morning. First of all, I prefer that time because the light changes quickly, and you can get shots of varying light intensity and secondly, there are very few people to interfere with what I'm doing (including at home).Lighting
I experimented with placement of the orchid, and decided to go for where some light would highlight the petals. Luckily the lower leaves also were softened. Generally, I choose what to do about light in an indoor shot, by moving the subject around until I get what I want.Equipment
Unlike almost all of your other members, I shoot with a lumix zs50 ( p&s) camera. I have options to set aperture, etc, and again I experiment.Inspiration
As soon as I received this gift I knew what I wanted to do with it. The beauty and colour of the orchid told me I must name her, hence, Orchid. That is also the reason I took this photo.....some things last a short time, but the photo will last forever.Editing
I did some post processing with Picasa, tweaked the highlights and used the vignette option to match the pink of the orchids(very easy to experiment with size, depth, etc.).In my camera bag
One of the reasons I like this camera is the portability. When I travel I carry a small camera bag with lens cleaners, extra batteries and several memory sticks. If I had to carry a heavier camera I don't think my wrists could take it (arthritic). When travelling my camera is usually in my pocket in a cloth bag and my other pocket contains passport, money, etc.Feedback
Experiment, move things around, take time. Look for the light, decide where you want highlights, again move things around. If you can, get a vision of what you are going to do with your photo, and plan it out.
