My girlfriend and I were travelling around in my 1992 mitsubishi pajero, which I had just camperized. We were travelling from Vancouver island up to Banff and Jasper and back home. This photo was taken at Athabasca falls which wasn't really a planned spot, but I'm definitely glad we stopped there.Time
We woke up in the town of Banff with ice on the interior of the pajero since it was the begining of November. I started up the vehicle after a couple good long cranks and we headed off on the road at about 7am. We fell upon the falls by one of those spontaneous decisions, which is pretty much how we always roll anyway, but I've found that it's usually those kinds of unplanned stops that make for the best experiences.Lighting
The lighting was perfect for this shot, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. The overcast sky defused the light and eliminated any harsh shadows. This particular photo would have been far to contrasted and busy if the sun had been out to play. The sky made for a good soft spot as well, to ofset the roughness of the trees and that beautiful rock wall. My favorite part about this photo is how nicely the tanned rock and the glacier blues interact.Equipment
This was back when I had my Nikon D7000 with a 12-24 F4 lens on. It definitely wasn't a professional setup whatsoever, but it did the trick. Sometimes your only limit is your minds eye.Inspiration
I'm going to have to say that the sheer beauty of this landscape inspired me to take this photo. I believe that is what inspires most landscape photographers, it's the landscape itself. The framing of the snow covered trees that swung up to the horizon where the pines mingle with the water that lead back to the right side where the rock resides, it kind of made a full loop. That is what is so awesome about landscape photography, there's beauty everywhere.Editing
I did a few tinkers with this photo, I never like to edit a photo too much. I attempt to recreate and embody the mood and atmosphere that the scene had when I captured the photo. I brought down the highlights to show more of the sky and brought some more vividness to the rock and water.In my camera bag
I usually travel pretty light, first off because Hike a lot and put food and water first and foremost above camera gear. So when it comes to the gear bag itself, I currently carry a Sony a7riii accompanied by my trusty 50mm 1.8 and a 24-105 f4. The 50mm prime just gives me that sharpness especially for when I want that rugged and raw detail in a lifestyle portrait. The zoom lens is primairly my all in one lens that I get most of my shots with. Along with my body and lenses I have a few filters, obviously an ND and CPL so that I can get those saucy sky details.Feedback
Best advice I can give anybody that wants to take a photo similar to this is to be in the moment. Arrive to a spot and soak in the surroundings, look around at different angles before you even take your camera out. This way you have a kind of have a respect for the landscape and in turn you get given killer compositions, just by taking that extra time to look around.
