This steam engine, the 1225 out of Owosso, Michigan was used as the model and sounds for the animated movie, The Polar Express. It now does trips for guests between Thanksgiving and Christmas, as photographers follow it to rural crossings to get shots of it.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in rural mid-Michigan, at a railroad crossing near the town of Owosso, on a very cold December Sunday.

Time

It was about 4:30 in the afternoon, the train was late, and I was so afraid that what was left of the fading afternoon light would be gone before the train got there! Sunset (not that there was any sun that day) was just after 5:00 pm.

Lighting

Not really, other than the light was fading fast. Natural light on a gloomy Sunday, December 17.

Equipment

Olympus OMD-EM1ii, 40-150 Olympus Pro lens, handheld.

Inspiration

The train was the inspiration for the movie The Polar Express, and runs for about a month between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and every trip to a local Christmas market in another town is sold out. It is a favorite for photographers and train enthusiasts. I had seen several shots on facebook by friends and had to capture my own.

Editing

Just a little to bump up the contrast and brighten it up a bit. I also cropped it to cut out the distracting sign on the building the train was passing.

In my camera bag

My OMD-em1, the Olympus 7-14, 12-40, and 40-150 Pro lenses, and the Olympus 60mm macro. Other primes float in and out depending on what I plan on shooting. I am usually outside so the flash sits in the other bag.

Feedback

Fast moving trains mean a fast shutter to freeze the train and the great smoke. I put my shutter on burst to make sure that I got the perfect shot of the steam coming from the engine. My mentor is always pushing me to just put any fears aside and just go out and shoot anywhere and everywhere.
