Beautiful. I have another followed on here took a similar pic. I hate to be cold too long, but would love to have another cod snap here and the chance to capture some ice like this...

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on the deck of my mother's home in Michigan during a visit.

Time

It was early on a very, very cold morning last January, which meant taking a series of shots, coming inside to unfreeze my fingers, and heading back out again.

Lighting

It was overcast (as usual), which meant cranking up the film speed to compensate for needing a fast shutter with no sun.

Equipment

An Olympus OMD EM-10 micro four thirds camera and an Olympus 60 mm macro lens. My first time out with the lens. I didn't have my tripod with me, so I had to turn up the shutter speed and held my breath! I've since learned about and bought a Raynox super macro extension, and my new camera, the EM-10 mark ii has in camera focus stacking, so I'm looking forward to even better results this winter.

Inspiration

What better use of a macro lens than trying to get a great shot of a snowflake the size of a pin head!

Editing

Just some basic editing on my ipad. Cropping and sharpening of the image.

In my camera bag

The nice thing about a micro four thirds system is that things are smaller and lighter so you can carry more. I adore Olympus's 60 mm prime macro lens, so that's always with me, and since I love to shoot birds their 75-300 zoom is usually along. I have a 17 mm prime, a 9 mm fisheye, and have made room for my new Raynox super macro extension lens for macro shooting. I'm still building my kit, and dreaming of being able to afford more of the pro series lenses!

Feedback

A great macro lens is essential and a tripod helps. Extras like extension tubes make it easier, and the equipment for focus stacking can take macro shooting to another level. It takes a lot of shots to end up with ones where the whole flake is in focus, so warm boots and a pair of fingerless mittens makes it a lot more comfortable. I am still learning and am always asking others how they shoot such amazing photos.
