Location
My backyard, which is most incredible during the winter months, was the setting for trying something new. The Milky Way was usually the subject, but not that night.Time
I had just put the kids into bed, so it must’ve been around 8pm.Lighting
This was the first time I tried lighting the steel wool on fire. It took me a few times to get the right amount of sparks to fly. Like usual, trail and error becomes my teacher.Equipment
Nikon D7200, Tamron 15-30 wide. I was shooting alone, so I set my camera to shoot on a timer, every 20 seconds. I listened for the ‘click’ and lit the wool. I counted out my 20 seconds for the shutter time, and ran back to see what I came up with. It was very much shooting from the hip, but even that can hit the target from time to time.Inspiration
I saw a few people playing around with steel wool on YouTube, and I immediately thought, “I think I can do that!”Editing
As always, Lightroom allowed me to touch it up a bit, but other than a slight purple hue, it’s pretty much as I shot it.In my camera bag
An ever changing array of Nikon glass with a couple D7200s consume the space in my bag. I like to keep a Garmin VIRB action camera for those moments I feel like doing something crazy and want to show my friends the proof.Feedback
Make sure your lanyard isn’t flammable. Those images are kept away for only my viewing... pleasure.
