This photo was taken mid winter at Hjerkinn, Dovrefjell, Norway, 1220 m above sea level. -11 degrees C (minus) and light wind. I love this place, cold like crazy and you normally see no people at all. So it's you and the animals. These guys are grumpy enough and can run up to 60 km/h. It makes me feel alive, but I don't have a death wish so I try to keep safe distance.
Time
Half an hour after noon, mid winter 29th November, partially overcast.
Lighting
It was partially overcast and limited light on this winter day this far north, so the light was limited. Still a few sun rays lit up the background and a little on the Muskox bulls' horns, giving the bronze patina that I really like about the shot.
Equipment
CAMERA Canon EOS 5D Mark IV
LENS Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM + 1.4x
ISO 400
FOCAL LENGTH 840.0 mm
APERTURE f/5.6
EXPOSURE TIME 1/800s
DATE TAKEN 2017-11-29
I used a monopod, tripod is always the best but due to the long walk on snowshoes it's good to minimise weight.
Inspiration
I have always been drawn against wild animals out in extreme conditions. I travelled all the way from Singapore to take this shot. When I meet these animals I feel like I have travelled several thousand years back in time.
Editing
I tuned it lightly in Lightroom, brightened up the shadows, made it a bit warmer and added a bit of vignette.
In my camera bag
2 Canon EOS 5D (Mk III + IV) bodies
600 mm f4
1.4 extender
70-200 mm f2.8
16-35 mm f2.8
Plenty of memory cards and batteries
Feedback
Never underestimate the cold weather. Bring extra wind breaking clothes to wear on top of the mountains where it normally is windy. Battery capacity is limited in such conditions so bring several and keep spare ones close to your body. Listen to the locals and use a professional guide if you are not familiar with these animals and the terrain. They may kill you, I am serious.
