The Blue City

A woman takes pride in keeping her home clean, making sure that even the steps are swept. It is a scene I have witness often in my short time in India. On the one hand, there is a lot of garbage on the streets, but on the other hand, people keep their little space scrupulously clean, which was very nice to see.
This picture was taken in the city of Jodhpur, in India, is known as the "Blue City" because of the blue colours that decorate many of the houses in the old city area.
Even experienced tour guides can’t agree on the underlying reason as to why blue was chosen. A blue pigment coating on a house used to indicate that a Brahmin—the priests of the Indian caste system—dwelled there, but over time the color became a badge of identity for non-Brahmins, too. It’s also said to have insect-repelling abilities.
Jodhpur is the second largest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan and officially the second metropolitan city of the state. It was formerly the seat of a princely state of the same name. The capital of the kingdom was known as Marwar.
