Best done in the winter, when the ground is frozen, and there are no insects to bother horses or people. It's easier on the horses to pull as opposed to muddy ground in warmer weather, and a way to keep horses in shape over the winter. This takes a great deal of finesse and horsemanship on the part of the teamsters, and absolute obedience and responsiveness on the part of the horses. This lovely team of Belgian mares worked all day without fuss or acting up.
