Thank you. A lot of the teamsters really put in the extra effort to make sure their horses are well turned out for these pulls.

Behind The Lens

Location

Some farmers in Wisconsin formed a farm horse pulling group, and hold monthly contests during the summer months. This shot was taken at one of their summer events.

Time

The pulls are held in the afternoon, in harsh sunlight.

Lighting

Harsh sunlight is something most photographers avoid, but in this case, it conveys the heat of the day.

Equipment

Handheld Olympus E-500, Zuiko 50-200mm f/2.8

Inspiration

I love the character that shows in the horses' faces, and how teams work together and communicate with each other and their teamster.

Editing

Horse events (horse shows, horse pulls, etc.) always have cluttered, unattractive backgrounds. I wanted this pair to be the main and only focus of the image, so I removed the background in Photoshop, added a plain background to complement the horses' colors, and made some basic adjustments in levels.

In my camera bag

Camera, lenses, extra batteries, cleaning wipes.

Feedback

Horses don't pose for very long, if at all. Timing, and lots and lots of practice pays off. Be observant for those often overlooked opportunities.
