Behind The Lens

Location

Off a two lane highway south of Colfax Washington USA.

Time

It was 8:53 am,

Lighting

The light was soft, due to clouds andtheearly hour.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D500 with a 18 to 200 lens. I shot it at 24mm without a tripod. I used a fast shutter and an aperture of 7.1 with iso of 400,

Inspiration

I had passed by here a few times before. Often the traffic was to heavy, to safely get out and shoot. I wanted to get this image for quite awhile. Finally, the time of day was right, the lighting soft and vey little traffic. There is no shoulder on this road. My wife was driving, she stopped I got out quickly walked back just a bit and took several shots. Being legally blind I did not notice the electrical lines, they seem to spoil the image a bit. I am about to get some new software that claims to eliminate lines automatically. It is Luminar ai, I am hoping it works as advertised. Oh, yes what inspired me? Simply I love living out west and taking images of old buildings, old fences or anything old that speaks of the old west.

Editing

Did not have to do to much to this image. Cropped, convert to monochrome and fool with the darks, greys and whites

In my camera bag

Nikon D500 and D700. Lens of 10-18, 18-200,28-300, 50mmm, 80-400. I keep an ND filter on each lens. Of course a number of cards and batteries are always packed away. I seldom use a tripod but I bring one along on trips, just in case. I am more likely to use a monopod, for ease of use.

Feedback

To get an image like this, you should travel back roads. Note things that you would like to capture but are unable to due to varying conditions. Then when possible go back under better nditions. Be aware of traffic and of private property. For me, I often will set my shutter and aperture before I even know what I will be shooting. I This is most effective when you have even lighting conditions. I will shoot at a neutral tone and set accordingly. I let the ISO vary. With the right camera and software, the noise can be handled later.
