Behind The Lens
Location
I took this photo at Cannon Beach, Ecola State Park, on the Oregon Coast, west of Portland. I was there for a quick trip from Portland while my wife was working in Portland. It was a quick trip to the coast, and I was not sure what I would find. This is a great site and I tried to return last year when I had more time, but the road into the park was washed out and I could not get close to the beach.Time
I shot this image at 2:10 PM. It was a random trip and I did not time it for the light or weather. You can take great pictures from this location at almost any time of the day. I am sure the light will change and present a different look early and late in the day.Lighting
The lighting was good, but I really liked the mist. It gives the image a nice soft touch that harsh sun light at that time of day would not be as attractive.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5DSR with a 100-400 II lens. It was shot hand held at 400mm, f7.1, 1/800s, ISO 100. I did not have a tripod with me, but the image stabilization with this lens is really good and I shot it a fairly high shutter speed. I tend to shoot at higher shutter speeds with this camera as the sensor has 50 mega pixels and is sensitive to movement.Inspiration
Cannon Beach is a beautiful site that I discovered on this day. This image is one of aa series of images I took that day.Editing
I shoot all my landscapes Raw and process everything with Capture One Pro. I made some adjustments to this image to bring out the hills in the upper part of the scene as they are engulfed by the mist. However, I wanted to keep most of the mist in the images to keep the mood of the scene, so I did not make any strong adjustments. The image is also cropped. I cropped out about a third of the image from the foreground as it did not contribute to the scene and I liked the rectangular shape. One of the advantages of 50 mega pixels is the ability to crop with any loss of quality to the image. In my camera bag
For landscapes, I always travel with my Canon 5DSR, although I sometimes add a Canon EOS R. I bring different lenses based on what I anticipate shooting. I usually carry a Canon 15 - 35 f2.8 II, Canon 24 - 70 f4 and Canon 100-400II. I might also bring a 135 F.2. I use slightly different lenses if am planning to shoot people. I might add a Canon 85 f1.4, or a Canon 200 f2.8. The R has a RT 24 - 104 f4. All of my lenses are "L" lenses. I generally will try to bring polarizing and ND filters that fit all of my lenses, and unless I am traveling light I will bring a tripod.Feedback
Plan to be surprised wherever you travel. Do not let the equipment you are carrying limit your shooting. This scene really called out for a tripod and perhaps a polarizing filter, but I did not have them with me. I shot anyway and got some really great images.
