Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. I usually shoot in city and urban settings but decided I needed to be more versatile.

Time

I love this photo specifically because it was taken the same day I quit my job to focus on my photography more. I use to deliver uniforms and textile to companies all over Colorado. I woke up at 4:30am this day and went in to work dreading the day. Once I was on route heading to northern Colorado for my deliveries, the thickest fog came about and was covering the mountains. All I could think about was wanting to go explore and shoot. So I had enough money saved up to chill for a couple of months and decided to turn around and quit my job that day. I picked up my daughter from her babysitter and we went to explore the mountains that morning.

Lighting

I usually like my photos to have this kind of dark yet perplexing feel to them. So I often like to go shoot when the weather is rather gloomy and overcast. However on this day the fog added to that gloomy setting in the mountains was perfect for the type of shots I was looking for.

Equipment

This was shot with a canon M5 mirrorless camera. I used a 18–150mm lens with a f/3.5–6.3 aperture. I didn’t use any other equipment.

Inspiration

Well since I wanted to be more versatile with my photography but still show my personality or mood; when I found this trail it was perfect. I wanted my viewers to get that dark mysterious vibe but also the urge to explore your places you’re curious about.

Editing

Yeah most of my images are done through Adobe Lightroom. I don’t normally like to manipulate my photos much because I’d like my content to be more organic I guess you could say. So I just made a few adjustments with the lighting and added a bit of the vignette effect and that was it.

In my camera bag

Honestly I just go out with my canon M5 and two lenses. A 22mm lens f/1.4 aperture and my 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 aperture. I do keep my tripod in my trunk if I need to run back and grab it for a shot.

Feedback

Have patience and get familiar with your camera! Sometimes you might find a shot you like and rush to take it, but later on look back at it and wish you would have maybe got a better angle or different perspective. Also timing is kind of a big deal, so try to plan ahead for some shots you’re looking for. Other than that try to step outside your comfort zone and don’t stop exploring!
