Perfect time when the sun is above, lighting up the painting, straight down through the dome on the roof of the church.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Vatican in St. Peters Basilica. The views and details are incredible. And to think how long ago the construction started takes your breath away. Nothing like this will ever be built again.

Time

This photo was taken in the middle of the afternoon. Sunlight was directly overhead. So outside nothing exciting, but inside, well you can the results here.

Lighting

The lighting was all natural, with the sunlight directly overhead streaming in to light the gallery inside the Basilica.

Equipment

Sony, DSC-HX100V , the exposure time was 1/50 handheld. focal length was 8.98 F stop number 3.5

Inspiration

The views inside the Basilica are so many it is hard to pick out what inspired me the most to take this particular photo. But looking up in this grand hall and seeing the sunlight pouring in was inspiration enough to quickly snap and hope. This was hand held and a slow shutter made it quick difficult to capture the scene. Took approximately twenty photos in this particular spot. This is the only one to come out correctly.

Editing

Yes, I highlighted the suns rays ( using Luminar 2018 ) and darkened the outer surrounding areas using Luminar 2017. Slightly color correcting the ceiling areas as they were extremely bright, and needed to be color corrected.

In my camera bag

Sony Cybershot , I like this camera because of its smaller size and weight. Has a Carl Zeiss lens 2,8-5,6 /4,8-144

Feedback

I hold my hand over the top area of my lens to stop any sun light from interfering with the photo being taken. If the light shows into the lens the photo will be lit too much and no matter how hard you work them up with any post photo application it will be difficult to fix. Or use a sun shield, I prefer my hand as I can maneuver it to block the sunlight from any direction. Sounds crazy, I am from the old school, so there is the answer. This is what happens when you are 75.
