... or Opuntia. Did you now these pears are edible? In Dalmatia, people eat those tasty fruits. You can also make excellent jam. Care should be taken in handling, as the white "dots" are composed of sharp, glass-fiber like needles. Those can be easily removed.
I used to wash the pears using heavy gloves, but the "traditional way" is to cover the fruits in mud, let it dry. The needles are removed with that earthen layer, and you can safely handle and wash the cleaned fruit!
