Location
This was taken on the Kipu Ranch near Lihue, Hawaii on the island of Kauai. We were on an ATV excursion and had stopped for lunch.Time
This was taken around one pm local time. Our group had all finished lunch and were cleaning up and relaxing before we took off on the ATVs again. This guy had been flitting from tree to tree while we ate. He apparently got brave and sat down at the table to look us over. I couldn't resist taking a quick shot.Lighting
This is 100% natural lighting. We were in a cove of trees so the sunlight was filtered by the trees. Gorgeous location, as just a few yards away was a small waterfall and pond.Equipment
I had my trusty Nikon D3300 and two lenses with me. I had been photographing the landscape. This guy waited patiently for me to switch lenses so I could get his close up.Inspiration
It was an opportunity not to be missed. How often does a character like this walk up to you and practically dare you to take his picture? And really, there was no resisting that cute face.Editing
I did a small amount of cropping, but basically you see what I did at the time.In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon D3300 with a Nikkor 55-220mm lens and a Nikkor 18-55mm lens. On top of that, a couple of ponytail holders to keep my hair out of the way, a writing utensil and small notebook to keep track of where I am for shots that I really like and a cleaning cloth - for the lenses and my glasses. :) Also a poncho for me and rain cover for my gear. I've been caught in a downpour too many times to go without.Feedback
A trip to Kauai will always be recommended by me for nature lovers. Birds always require patience to capture their personality. But you always need to be ready, because sometime the best shots don't give you any warning. This one certainly didn't!
