Behind The Lens

Location

Bolton Abby is located in 22 miles north west of Leeds, England. The area is a village and civil parish in the Craven district of Yorkshire. The Abby was built in the 12th century part of a Augustinian monastery now known as Bolton Priory. The priory closed in the 1539 dissolution of the monasteries ordered by King Henry VIII. My father traveled there and visited the Abby in his early twenties and I had grown up looking at pictures he had taken of this place. In 2017 my sister with our spouses, took our father to England to revisit the areas he had lived in. This was one of our stops while visiting the country.

Time

This photo was taken mid October and the sun sets early this time of the year. With just a few hours before sunset we wondered around the Abby to find the best composition.

Lighting

The large puffy clouds caught the last bit of golden sunlight before it sank below the horizon. I felt very fortunate to have captured such gorgeous light knowing that I would probably never get a do over as we were just traveling through the area.

Equipment

This shot was captured with a Nikon D7200 and a Tamron 17-50 mm lens F10 1/40 sec on a tripod.

Inspiration

Inspiration from this photo comes from my childhood. I never thought that I would get a chance to visit the same area that my father visited when he was in his early 20s. It just so happens that I was lucky to have been there at the right place at the right time to capture the sun setting behind the Abby. For me this is a once in a lifetime shot.

Editing

There was not a lot of postprocessing done to this photo other than taking it from a Raw file format. Then bringing up the shadows and down the highlights and correcting the color profile.

In my camera bag

Travelling abroad makes it hard to bring your whole kit with you. On this trip I traveled with my Nikon D 7200 camera a wide angle for landscape Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and a good overall walking around lens Tamron 16-400 mm. Good ND filter and a polarizing filter are always a must. And a trusted travel tripod.

Feedback

Always pack your camera and tripod with you at all times. You never know what you may stumble across and the thrill of being in the right place and the right time.
