Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Son Baulo, a local beach near me, in the north coast of Mallorca.

Time

This was taken in late October, mid-morning. It was a beautiful sunny day, but really blustery, and the waves were crashing on the rocks, sending sea spray all around, and making that wonderful 'wooshing' sound so evocative of seaside trips.

Lighting

I wanted to really get close to the action, be almost among the waves (without getting splash all over my camera!!!) I edged as close as I could, watching as the waves crashed on the rocks - I shot a number of photos, trying to catch as much of the splash as I could.

Equipment

Canon EOS 5D Mark III, hand held

Inspiration

I love the sea - there is something so beautiful about its awesome power, sometimes disguised as gentle drops and splash....I always want to capture that movement, see the splash rise and fall while everything around it seems to stay still. On this day, the sea was playing, sending waves crashing onto the rocks and the beach, and I stayed for quite a while, looking, listening and photographing it.

Editing

I enhanced the photograph using ACDSee Pro7, making it sharper by using the exposure and lighting features and also sharpening the colours a little bit to give it more punch and highlight the droplets and splash.

In my camera bag

Canon EOS 5D Mark III, GoPro5, 70-300mm lens, mini-tripod

Feedback

Pick a good day - you need wind and high seas for splash photos, and the brightness of the sun really helps to get that crisp look and nice colour. Patience too - it can take a while to get the right photo - waves and rocks are not always too cooperative! Take lots of shots - it's easier to pick one you are happy with if you have a few to choose from.
