This echidna was looking for ants on a friend’s property. We live close by and have had the occasional visit from echidnas as well. It is always a thrill to see them.
The platypus and four species of echidna are the only egg laying mammals on the planet. They only occur in Australia and New Guinea. This is an Australian Echidna. They mainly eat ants and termites using a long sticky tongue to draw them into their mouths. The young spineless echidna is called puggle and is carried in its mothers pouch where it suckles milk that is exuded from the skin.
A wonder of nature!
