This photo was taken in my bedroom. I had been approached on several occasions about doing a boudoir shoot and my answer was always, "I would love to but I have never done a shoot of that nature and I don't even know where to start." Going back and forth via text with a friend of mine that lives in Milwaukee, she suggested I ask for volunteers or do some free shoots to get familiar with the style of shooting. I tossed the idea around a lot in my head and joked with her that we had been friends so long that it wouldn't phase me to see her half naked. We joked off and on about this for months b/c I didn't have the confidence to even try.Time
This photo was taken on August 8, 2017 in the evening around 6pm. Circumstances brought my friend to Texas and she ended up at my house with a lot of lingerie. Surprisingly enough, she was just as nervous about this as I was and she has purchased boudoir photos in the past for her husband. I remember struggling to open a bottle of wine to give to her to calm her down a bit b/c there was no need for both of us being nervousLighting
I had thought about where to place lights, how much light, what look I was going for all in the weeks leading up to the shoot. The night we actually did the shoot I couldn't remember a thing about lighting. I couldn't find the notes I had written down and I was a nervous wreck knocking all my lights over several time...don't tell anyone but I even forgot what the ISO was for during a brief moment of insanity. Lol. I did have to play with the lighting a bit to achieve what I felt was the perfect lighting.Equipment
This shot was taken with a D3400 with a 70-200mm sigma lens. I used 2 continuous lighted soft boxes and a flash that I had set up off camera.Inspiration
The model had calmed down a great deal and I was finally starting to get some of my creative feelings back. I was talking to her casually b/c most of the shots we had taken didn't feel natural to me and during a brief moment when I had got her positioned like I wanted finally I made sarcastic remark and she looked at me and at that moment I saw the look I wanted.Editing
Yes. I did a few clean up touches with a few distracting objects that were in the picture and I softened the look a bit. When I added a bit of clarity it boosted the lighting up a bit which worked out great. In my camera bag
I normally carry my all time favorite lens, Sigma 18-300mm and my Nikkor 35mm lens. Those are my go to lenses. I have an external flash and a ton of extra batteries and memory cards.Feedback
My advice would be to definitely shoot. Use your fears and uncertainty as your strength. No matter what your results are, the only one that knows what you were going for is you and there is no such thing as a failed shot. Every image tells a story, even the same image with post processing differences. Tell your story your way. The only true way to know whether or not it is the story you want to tell, is to shoot it.
