One of the major buildings in Bannack, MT, a gold rush ghost town and the original capitol of the state. The building housed a one-room school on the ground floor, and a Masonic Temple on the second story. Bannack is managed as a state park and is being restored only enough to prevent further deterioration.

Location
This building is in the ghost town of Bannack, MT which is is in the southwest corner of the state, not far from the town of Dillon. The town was founded after the discovery of gold in Grasshopper Creek and became the first capitol of the state. A number of the original buildings are still standing and the town is maintained as a state park with the emphasis on preservation of what remains rather that restoration to original condition. Bannack is famous as the town which hung its own sheriff when it was revealed that he was in cahoots with a band of desperadoes who robbed gold shipments out of the town.Time
Despite the ominous gray sky, this shot was taken in the early afternoon of a midsummer day. Shortly after we left Bannack and were on the hard road we experienced a fierce thunder, lightning, rain, hail, wind Rocky Mountain "summer shower".Lighting
A major storm was building in the west during our visit to Bannack. The sky was overcast causing the light to be flat and shadowless but I thought that added to the spectral feeling of the abandoned buildings.Equipment
Taken with a Nikon D70s, handheld, 1/160sec, f/9 , zoom lens at 34mm.Inspiration
Most of my working career has been in various aspects of the building trades and I'm an amateur student of history so I naturally take a lot of photos of old buildings.Editing
I used an open source program called Lightzone to bump up the contrast and accentuate the textures-nothing very extreme. Mainly tried to compensate for the extremely flat light conditions. In my camera bag
My gear is pretty bare bones. I usually go out with one camera, currently a Nikon D7100, and the kit lenses which came with the camera- 18-55mm and a 55-300mm. If I'm traveling I'll take both lenses, battery charger, extra SD card and never leave home without a blower brush. If I'm out walking around I usually pick the lens that seems most appropriate and do what I can with it. If I had more money I'd probably have more gear, but I'm more interested in the image than what made it. So far I don't feel that I am limited by my equipment and I generally like to travel light.Feedback
