This is the 3rd failed attempt at a moonset between the rocks, but the story behind this photo is worth sharing.
I first envisioned this shot 2 years ago, just as I started nightscape astrophotography and headed down to Sugarloaf Rock on a clear and calm night. When I reached the desired location, I saw 2 photographers trying for the same shot and felt that it would have been bad etiquette to interfere with their composition. I stayed at the lookout point instead and did not manage to get the shot I wanted.
I've been back to Sugarloaf every year since then to try for the same shot but conditions have never been ideal.
Last night, was forecasted to be clear at Dunsborough and I rushed down for attempt number 3. It was a totally clear day, not a cloud in the sky during sunset. But as soon as it got dark, it clouded over within a space of 10 mins and ruined the composition.
I packed up and headed back up to the car but missed my turn and got lost. Tracking along the shoreline for half an hour until I got frustrated and attempted to bash through the bush to get back to the car park (DO NOT EVER DO THIS). I got stuck in the bushes and freaked out. The feeling of being lost in the dark without any visible way out was immensely terrifying.
I calmed myself for a moment and regained my composure and decided the best course of action was to retrace my steps, head back down to the beach and find the exit track. Calmer thoughts prevailed and I found the exit point. Sweating and exhausted, I took a moment to reflect on the mistake made. I had a rest and a drink of water... and then the long 3 hour drive home.
See you next year Sugarloaf Rock. I will not be defeated by you.
