Location
This photo was taken on Carmel River Beach in California. Since the river is blocked from entering the ocean, there is a small lagoon. Dozens of brown pelicans come to the lagoon to drink/bathe in the fresh water.Time
Late morning.Lighting
Great reflections of light coming off of the lagoon water.Equipment
Nikon D5500. my favorite 17-300MM Nikor lensInspiration
I was trying to capture high speed shots of the pelicans either landing or diving into the water. This guy turned into the wind just before he came in for a landing.Editing
Yes. Big fan of Lightroom to bring out some of the birds shadows and darken the blue sky.In my camera bag
This beach is only a mile or so from my house. As a result, I just had my camera that day. I typically only carry the 17-300mm lens since it has such a wide zoom range. I also usually carry neutral density filters to help capture motion (speed blur) in subjects like birds and ocean wavesFeedback
Around the lagoon (and most bodies of water) most birds will land going into the wind. Position your self down wind (and stay covered) so the birds come towards you as they set up their final landing approach.
