Behind The Lens

Location

This was an indoor photoshoot in a hotel room where my friends were staying at that time.

Time

The photoshoot took place late afternoon until evening.

Lighting

As we were shooting indoors and we started quite late, we were losing our natural light from the hotel window. I was planning to shoot using the hotel lamp and my speedlite setup nearby on slave mode however luckily my friend's husband brought one of his continuous light and we used that.

Equipment

I had my T3 Canon dslr with me using my 50mm f 1.8 lens.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the peaceful innocence of my 14-day old godson so I took this photo while he being carried by his dad and fell asleep.

Editing

As for any newborn shoot, I wanted each photo to come out with soft warm tones. Post processing involve less contrast, warmer colors and making the red color of the scarf more vibrant.

In my camera bag

For an indoor portrait shoot I would usually have my 50mm lens with me + my 18-55mm kit lens just in case I needed to have wider shots. I always bring a tripod, one speedlite and remote triggers just in case I need external lights.

Feedback

A Newborn photoshoot is one of the most challenging but rewarding experience I've had as a photographer. As a newborn babies are unpredictable and you have to adopt to their sleeping habits, temperament and mood, I learned that the most special photos such as this one are caught when you're in the moment. You have to be ready to capture this moments quickly.
