Location
This photo was shot near my home in Denver, Colorado. I took the picture as it was just beginning to snow so there were relatively few snowflakes. I used a tinted car window as my background and captured the flakes that were collecting on the window.Time
I took this in the very early morning.Lighting
This photo was shot with all natural light.Equipment
I use a Canon T5i and a 55 - 250mm at 250mm because I loved the compression it put on the image. Also, I don't own a macro lens. I do all of my macro work with telephoto lenses. Telemacro is an under utilized genre in photography.Inspiration
When I took this photo I was trying to replicate some of the beautiful macro snowflake images I had seen recently. It was really difficult because I had to wait for a snow that was producing really defined flakes. This was also a difficult shot to capture because snow was falling and additional flakes kept collecting near the ones I wanted to image. There was a lot of stopping and blowing the excess snowflakes off of the car window I was using as my background. However, my breath was too warm and it would often melt the snowflakes I wanted to image if I wasn't careful. There was definitely some trial and error involved.Editing
I did quite a bit of post-processing on this image. It's cropped in relatively far. I removed most of the other snowflakes that were collecting on the car window as I was taking the image and gaussian blurred the additional flakes that I wanted to keep in the background. In my camera bag
In my bag you'll usually find a 55 to 250mm, a 28 - 135mm, and a 50mm 1.2 along with a Speedlight and my Canon 80D.Feedback
Patience was the most important thing that went into creating this image. It took me months to get just the right type of snow at a time when I was available to take a shot like this. I would also tell other photographers not to be afraid to use the gear they have in creative ways. You don't have to have the "perfect" equipment to capture a great image. Just because most photographers do things one way doesn't mean you won't or can't be successful doing things differently. Don't be afraid to try.
