Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my backyard. I, the photographer, am outside of the water. The model, my wife, is underwater in a large tank that we own. The mermaid tail costume is designed and created by us. Make-up and costume accessories were all done by us as well.

Time

It was a night time shoot.

Lighting

So we wanted a dark, emotive look to send the message through. I am using constant light for this shot. I have two lights coming in from either side of the tank, and one light shooting down into the water. And of course a string of “carny lights” as practicals, but they do not do much.

Equipment

Canon mkiii with 24-105 F4. Lighting was Home Depot clamp lights.

Inspiration

Both my wife and I are circus performers. We use this giant tank for a circus mermaid sideshow act we do. I am a clown and she is a mermaid, so we always love to play on that idea. This is supposed to be a reflection of the performer life, spending most of your energy putting on a fake smile and making the audience laugh. Even if it eats away at your own happiness.

Editing

Post processing was done in PS and was just the basic color correction.

In my camera bag

Just a camera, one lens, and a good pair of eyeballs.

Feedback

Care more about the message than trying to get a perfect shot. I’m not a pro by any means, but I think the idea of the image gets across.
