Location
This photo was taken outside of St. Petersburg, Russia at the Catherine's Palace. A most stunning, sprawling palace painted in blue. It blended with the very blue sky. My objective was to focus on a detail of the architecture, which is typically Russian in design with its whimsical domes.Time
The photo was taken in the afternoon and the sun cast a shadow on one of the wings creating a nice contrast with the bright sky and the blue of the adjacent wing.Lighting
I wanted this photo to draw attention to the domes thus I zoomed in and took advantage of the sun's shadow on the one wing creating a nice contrast between the wings.Equipment
A Sony DSC-V1, no tripodInspiration
The luxurious architecture and interiors of the palaces, churches, museums and other structures in St. Petersburg provide tremendous subjects for photographing and painting. It is an amazing city blending Russian and western European aesthetics. Go check it out and enjoy your shoots!Editing
Minor processingIn my camera bag
These days I shoot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III. I normally have a Canon 50mm lens, Canon's 24-105mm kit lens, a Sigma 105mm macro and the Canon 70-200mm Zoom.Feedback
Not only should you capture the scope of the entire architecture but also seek the details within the mass.
