Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Manarola of Cinque Terre on the coast of Italy.

Time

I took this photo at the busiest time of the day: noon. It was packed with people, the sun was blazing, I was sweating, but I still managed to capture such a beautiful overview of Manarola, despite the craziness.

Lighting

Lighting is a very important part of a composition. Make sure you're standing with your back against the light when taking the subject, this way, you're able to use a lower ISO and capture the subject darker, and then brighten it up during post-editing. I highly recommend ND filters to filter out the harsh sun-lights when taking day photos during summer.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 550D with a Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 lens handheld.

Inspiration

I basically came to Cinque Terre to capture this scene. It's such a beautiful place, and the way everything is situated is just amazing. Any angle of this little village looks astonishing.

Editing

Yes! Definitely! Post-editing is one of my favourite things to look forward to when taking photos. There's just so much potential and so much you can change from a blunt photo during post-editing. For this particular photo, I kept the sweet summer look by enhancing the colours a little and making them not too vibrant by attempting the pastel look. A darkened exposure in the sky was used to recall all the details as it was so bright that day.

In my camera bag

I usually carry around my camera (I have now upgraded to a Canon 6D), a Canon kit lens 24-105mm f.4, Canon 50mm f1.8, Manfrotto Compact Action Tripod, Joby Gorillapod SLR Zoom, B+W 77mm #110 ND Filter 10 Stop, Cokin P.154, P.121 L, P.121 S, Camera Remote, Camera Batteries (lots of those) and SD Cards.

Feedback

Try to go to this location during early hours or sunset. Those are the times where there are fewer tourists, plus the skies will look fantastic I guarantee you!
