I created this black and white photograph of an antique Sikorsky model S-55 helicopter at Gilbert Field in Winter Haven, Florida. My research indicates that the first versions of this helicopter flew in 1949 as test aircraft. The U.S. military purchased them starting in 1950 under various designations depending on which branch bought and used them. In 1962 all branches designated them as H-19's. They were considered to be multi-use aircraft.
