Behind The Lens

Location

This chrysanthemum was a present to my wife who absolutely loves them. It was sitting pretty outside so I decided to grab my camera and snap a few shots.

Time

This was late afternoon, after it had cooled off a bit. It was in full bloom and I loved the geometric quality of the petals.

Lighting

This was shot in natural light. It was a nice, bright day, but late afternoon, so the light quality was perfect.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D3100 with a Tamron 70-300mm tele-macro lens. I used an aperture of f/5.6, ISO 3200, shutter speed of 10/2000, and focal length of 3000/10. No flash and hand-held.

Inspiration

I was sitting outside and looking at the pattern of the blooms and thought it was interesting. Plus, we hadn't had a purple chrysanthemum before, and I loved the vibrancy of the color. I'm always looking for something to shoot, and decide it would make a nice close-up picture.

Editing

I bumped the vibrance and brightness contrast in Photoshop to get the shading I wanted.

In my camera bag

I only have my Nikon D3100, and I always pack the Tamron 70-300mm with macro, because those shots always interest me. I also carry my Nikon DX 18-55mm lens, my impact DVP-TP20-62 2x telephoto lens, a Vivitar 2x converter,a Vivitar high definition wide angle converter with macro, and if I'm trying to shoot nature, a Vivitar Series 1 650-1300mm telephoto lens.

Feedback

Watch the direction of the light. Too much direct light makes the colors wash out and glare.
