Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a commercial resident place where I was planning to explore the area for architecture photography lesson.

Time

I remember this photo was taken in the late afternoon at the time 5:43pm 2nd November 2013.

Lighting

It was after rain and cloudy, the light was not too harsh and I shot the photo with the ambience light. Based on the lighting condition at the spot, I used the metering in the camera to achieve the exposure I want in the photo.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 70D with EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, no other equipment.

Inspiration

I was looking around the place to find a good spot to capture the architecture perspective for my self taught lesson, when I did a low angel frame of the building I realised a creativity shot with a water reflection of the colourful umbrella.

Editing

After looking at the playback photo that I have taken, I knew I need to enhance the under exposure part of the photo. I developed the raw photo in Photoshop, fine tune the white balance, contrast, exposure, highlight, shadow and black. Then I cropped the unnecessary part to make the photo looks more interesting.

In my camera bag

I always pack with my Canon 5D camera with telephoto lens EF 24-70mm f/2.8 for street and architecture scouting photoshoot and I always have additional lens 16-35mm f/2.8 for landscape, cityscape photoshoot. I have both lens to cover most of the subject I want to shoot.

Feedback

Photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place, you will get inspiring ideas when you shoot more.
