Acoma is also called "sky city" because it is built on a small, high mesa. Like their close relatives who dwell on the Hopi Mesas, this was presumably done for defense. But there may have been religious reasons, as well. It has been a big effort for centuries to haul water and food up, as well as continually climbing up-n-down to tend crops.
