Behind The Lens

Location

This shot is from a small lake/marshland just outside of my home town, Linköping, Sweden.

Time

As the family was preparing for bed I packed my gear for my first astro shoot ever. I had watched countless YT-films on settings and other stuff, but this was IT. I came to the location well after sundown but the moon was still up, shining really bright. Getting out of the car I heard growling and scuffing from the ditch, but as it was really dark (I wasn't used to the dark yet and couldn't see ANYTHING) I couldn't see what it was. I was allready quite nervous about beeing out here all alone in the dark and had to look for my flashlight in the car. A badger ran away as I found it and he/she was probably just as scared as I was!

Lighting

This shot is taken just as the moon had set behind the trees. There was a bit more clouds and light than I hoped, but I think they created some interest in the picture in the end. You can't see as much of the Milky Way that I had hoped, but I'm still happy with how it turned out.

Equipment

Canon 6d camera, Sigma 20 mm Art f/1,4 and a tripod.

Inspiration

I had wanted for some time to try astro photography. I had read about the best time of year to see the Milky Way from my hometown in Sweden and used the app The Photographers Ephimeris to choose a location, not to far away from home. I chose a nigth with clear weather and hoped for the best.

Editing

I have edited the raw image using Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Nik Color Efex Pro 4 to bring out the stars and milky way and reflect the colors I saw that night.

In my camera bag

I have my trusted ff-friend Canon 6d that I bought last year. My primary lenses are a Canon 70-200 f2,8, Tamron 24-70 f/2,8 G2 and a Tamron 90mm macro. For this shoot I had borrowed a wide angle Sigma Art 20 mm f/1,4 lense from work. It's wonderful for astro and landscape shots! I also have a Genesis G3 carbon fibre tripod. Right now I'm saving up for a nice bag to carry all this with me in a good way. At the moment I carry them in different smaller bags and pouches - not good! But soon... :)

Feedback

Check out good locations in advance. Be sure not to have a big city in the direction you need to shoot (light pollution sucks!) and check the weather forecasts. Also, be aware of safety when going out alone! I only met the angry badger, but you never know. Bring a friend or keep your mobile handy. Another good thing to bring is: patience, patience and some more patience (and warm clothes!).
