Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the public boat launch in my hometown of Milford, Connecticut.

Time

I like shooting first thing in the morning when I shoot outdoors. Everything is quiet and almost new. I was at the boat launch by 7:30 am.

Lighting

If I'm remembering right the sun was behind me and the overcast sky was just defused everything.

Equipment

The photo was captured with my Nikon 3400, freehand with my Sigma 10-20 mm wide angle lens, set for a F10. I set my ISO for 400 and the shutter speed was set at 1/250 since I was shooting free hand.

Inspiration

Honestly, I just really loved the view.

Editing

I did a little post work on this shot. I used Corel's Paint Shop Pro. All I did was adjust the white balance, added a polarizing filter to bring out the clouds a bit more and added a blue tint to give the shot a cooler feeling.

In my camera bag

My bag is pretty simple actually. I use either my Nikon D80 of my Nikon 3400 and I only bring one lens. I either bring my Sigma wide angle, a Nikkor 70-300 mm zoom, a Nikkor 18-55, or a Nikkor 35mm 1:1. I've found over the years that the less I gear bring, the more creative I have to be to get the shots I'm looking for. I bring a tripod about 50% of the time.

Feedback

Do your homework.Scout the location. What track does the sun take across the sky? What time is sunrise and/or sunset? I usually shoot at the same location many times. The more you shoot there the more familiar you become with the environment and the more you see and the better shots you get..
