This egret was fishing for shad in an estuary of the San Francisco Bay which is literally in downtown Stockton about 2 blocks from the courthouse. He would see some fish near the surface, then take off flying and thrust his bill into the water while he continued flying. He literally flew over his own head! This is the only time I have ever seen this behavior. And he was quite often successful.
