Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken before sunrise at Naddi, Himachal Pradesh. It's a half an hour drive from Dharamshala.

Time

Before sunrise. Around 5:45pm.

Lighting

It is natural light and the best time of the day i.e., the Golden Hour. For this picture, I had mostly focused on the thin and winding roads and the pine trees getting illuminated by the setting sun in the backdrop.

Equipment

Nikon D90 camera body and 18-105mm Nikon lens

Inspiration

I have always loved mountains and capturing mountainscapes. The light quality in the higher altitudes is quite different from the ones we get to see in the plains. This was a trip which I had been looking forward to as the month was December and it was snowing heavily in Himachal Pradesh. Although, we couldn't get to see the snow here in this particular place but the setting sun and winding roads really did make for a great travel photograph. Also, bird's eye view always does give you good pictures. At least, most of the times.

Editing

This particular photo has not been post-processed much. I only edit and post-process photos when required. Going the National Geographic rule book, I just adjusted the hue, contrast and brightness. Nothing more than 3 minutes of edit.

In my camera bag

Just my camera. Two lenses and a tripod. Carrying a reflector too nowadays.

Feedback

Study the light. That's essential. And, then go ahead with your gut feeling. Travel photographs are a lot about chance happenings. So, venturing out is quite important. But, at the same time if you are aware of any place and you know you would get that particular shot at a particular time, go for it. That's a bonus.
