Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in a power line clearing between a section of woods. Those are always good locations for variety and privacy. ...ironically enough, it was gated off shortly after the shoot. Go figure!

Time

Started midday and shot into the afternoon.

Lighting

Nothing special. Just the sun over our shoulders. I utilized a gold-face reflector at points to help bounce some warmth into the shots (it was a cold day).

Equipment

Canon 6D + Tamron 28-75 2.8.

Inspiration

I’m not really sure where it came from. If I’m being honest, the model - Jordan - was a truly elevating energy to work with. She has a powerful stare and the confidence to do raw work like this and be absolutely natural about it. I think it was one of the few times I worked with someone who saw me eye-to-eye.

Editing

Besides the obvious, no. This whole set deserved black and white but nothing extraordinary happened behind the scenes. I just did my normal thing to it.

In my camera bag

Very little. My canon backpack is mostly air and the name on the front pocket.

Feedback

If you have an intense backdrop like this with lots of shapes and textures happening at once, don’t go crazy with your model and outfit. A photographer’s job isn’t to just play with the contrast sliders on editing software, it’s also to dance the contrast of people and things, backdrop and subject, light and shadow, color or lack of it, textures and shapes. You have to own all of it.
