Behind The Lens

Location

“Coastal Edge” was capture at the rugged coastline near La Perouse, a suburb 14km south of the Sydney CBD. The location is quite remote considering it is close proximity to Australia’s largest city. From the carpark to the site of the location is about a one kilometer walk along a sandy track to the cliff edge.

Time

I arrived at the site just after sunrise expecting the cloud laden sky to be color textured by early morning sun. After setting up my equipment positioned precariously at the cliff edge I waited for the right moment to capture the photograph.

Lighting

Photographing the landscape early morning is always worth the effort of hauling yourself out of a warm, comfortable bed before sunrise. Of course this realization is only apparent once you arrive at the chosen destination. But, luck does play a role with ambient light conditions and very quickly the light can change from appearing flat and lifeless to an arch of radiating colour.

Equipment

Some say it’s not the destination but the journey. I always appreciate the destination after carrying kilos of camera equipment (you never know what lens you may need...) and sturdy tripod when embarking on landscape photography. My equipment is Nikon based, however I believe it’s not the brand that captures great images it is the photographer. ‘Coastal Edge’ was recorded with a 15mm Irix lens I recently purchased. Irix is a relatively new company and the few lenses they manufacture are designed in Europe and built in Korea. The 15mm f2.5 lens is manual focus and a glass plate filter holder can be attached to the front. However, there is provision to insert filter gels at the rear of the lens.

Inspiration

The coastline of New South Wales is predominantly rocky and rugged from millions of years of exposed to various weather conditions wearing away the coastal limestone edge. I enjoy living close to the coast and take advantage of my proximity to explore many wonderful location not far from my home.

Editing

What I enjoy about digital photography is the ‘clean’ and engaging production process and tweaking the dynamic tonal range recorded by the camera’s sensor. I use Photoshop (Windows 10) and Gimp (on a Linux based computer) for post production editing. I always shoot RAW, so even if the images were camera perfect exposures I would still need to post-process. I started my photography journey with film and spending hours in the darkroom with hands usually soaked in fixer. The benefit of digital generated images far out weigh the days of isolation and loneliness of working under a red light.

In my camera bag

The equipment I take out on location is always too much. I recall walking the mountains of Huangshan (China) with 12 kilos of camera gear in my backpack plus my sturdy tripod... it almost killed me. And I only used one lens the entire time. But I still haven’t learnt equipment efficiency and often repeating taking too much gear out on location.

Feedback

Photography, as we are well aware, is about capturing light and a moment in time. Some of the best moments and of course the best light is when you reluctantly drag yourself out of bed before sunrise and get outside and enjoy the moment.
