Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while on a backpacking trip on Cape Chignecto in Nova Scotia

Time

After a pretty grueling day of hiking up and down ravines, we landed at Refugee Cove for the night. We took a sunset walk along the water, enjoying the rocks that seemed to be shades of red and green and softly rounded. In fact somebody had stacked this small cairn and the shapes simply drew me in.

Lighting

The soft, late day light added to the peaceful feeling. I loved this cove...

Equipment

The only equipment that I carried on my trip was a Nikon D7100 along with my Nikon 24-120 f/4 lens. I laid on my belly and propped my camera on a rock to stabilize for this image.

Inspiration

The soft light along with the similar shapes of the cairn and the haystack. The haystack reflection in the cove was a wonderful bonus!

Editing

I did various editing in Lightroom, including: contrast around the cairn, some dehaze, spot healing to get rid of all the bugs flying over the water!

In my camera bag

I only carry my camera and one lens while backpacking due to weight. Normally I carry a variety of lenses to cover 11mm-500mm, polarizing filters for each lens, a graduated 2 stop ND filter, beanbag, tripod, pano head (because you never know!),rain cover, extra batteries and sd cards...My bag is pretty heavy!

Feedback

Getting in the habit of looking for a unique perspective frees your mind to capture the ordinary in an extraordinary way. I was laying on my belly for this shot and had I been standing the shot simply would not have been anything more than a snapshot. Also, decide how you would like your image to look before you start shooting as that will help you decide settings and point of focus. Get creative and have fun!
