Behind The Lens

Location

This image of my youngest son was taken in our backyard. Transporting the water and everything needed wasn't something I wanted to worry about so I decided to keep it simple. My wife had wanted to do a series like this when he was younger but when we tried, he was not interested haha. A year later we tried again and he had a blast!

Time

This image was taken during the golden hour, just before sunset. Our home is surrounded by trees which provides a lot of shade during the day but at sunset, I get beautiful light. Typically natural light is most flattering during the golden hour however, you can still get great shots on cloudy days or in the shade.

Lighting

This image was taken in natural light. Also, my house is white and it acted like a big reflector and provided a nice catchlight in his eye. When shooting a portrait using natural light, look for flattering light particularly on your subject's face. You can also use reflectors and or off camera flash to help make the best use of your available light.

Equipment

This image was taken on a Nikon D5500 with a Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 Di VC lens using natural light. f/3.5, 1/200th, ISO 250, 200mm

Inspiration

A bubble bath photo series was my wife's idea but I was happy to play along. Doing this series has given us wonderful memories that we will cherish for years to come! I try to take many photos of my kids as they grow up so fast and I want to have memories for us to look back on. Years ago I was deployed overseas and for two years, I watched my children grow up through photos (ones that I still cherish to this day). When my wife and I found out we were having our third, I decided to invest into a DSLR and that is when my passion began.

Editing

I shoot all of my images in RAW and process them using Lightroom and Photoshop. I do 95% of my work in Lightroom and I like to hand edit each image. This allows me to get the exact result I'm looking for. I tend to stay away from presets but that is just my personal preference. Shooting in RAW however is something that I highly recommend. The files are larger and take up more space however, it provides you with the maximum amount of light information and control over processing your image.

In my camera bag

I recently upgraded my camera body from a Nikon D5500 to a Nikon D750. Aside from my camera, I always carry a Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 Di VC and Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 Di VC lens along with a speedlight, spare batteries, rain gear, etc. I try to prepare and plan as much as possible ahead of a shoot and in many cases, I will make a checklist to be sure I have everything needed. I've made rookie mistakes in the past like arriving on location only to realize I don't have any SD cards haha. Unfortunately it happens so, be prepared!

Feedback

My biggest advice is to just have fun. Working with kids (or anyone for that matter) can be a challenge. I've learned that if a child is not having fun, it will be very difficult to capture a good image. I prefer to shoot portraits in more of a lifestyle sort of way. Instead of poses, many times I try to capture my subject's personality in their own element. In this image, my son was splashing around and having fun in his bubble bath. I don't think he ever expected to have water splash up and hit him in the face and he was quite surprised when it happened but burst into laughter. I was lucky enough to be there and ready and was able to capture this image. This image isn't what I had in my mind when I started shooting however, it represented my son's personality and his joy perfectly. Sometimes it's nice to get an unexpected result. When trying something like this, just keep shooting. You never know what will happen! I always enjoy going through my images on the computer to see what I got and when I saw this one, I knew that it would be my favorite from this series. I really appreciate the feedback I've received for this image and I hope it inspire others!
