I was shooting a wedding in Colorado Springs and this is at the Pinery..This is the bride walking down the stairs into the reception hall, not her grand entrance, not her first look, just walking around the venue after getting ready and before her ceremony. Totally unscripted and by chance.Time
This was taken middle of the day, and talk about a stroke of luck with the harsh blazing Colorado sun shooting through that window. One more step and she was right in the hot light.Lighting
Being a wedding photographer, you should always be "on" and ready to fire.. This was not a moment that would have warranted me shooting, it was actually the downtime, I could have very well been taking a 10 minute break. I had just finished with doing getting ready and she was just walking around the venue. This has always been one of my favorite images because of the lines, the brief moment where she is in the perfect light.Equipment
This is a canon 5 D mark 3 and probably my canon 50mm 1.2, handheldInspiration
I have been shooting weddings for 17 years, and you have to be ready for your opportunities...most of my favorite images are unscripted and because I am fast I catch these things.Editing
The beauty of this is that it is so simple. I used lightroom and I knew i wanted a vintage feel to it. She is so elegant and I wanted a matte look to the black and white so I flattened my blacks a bit and called it a day.In my camera bag
For weddings I wear a harness with two bodies. I use a Canon 5D mark 3 and Mark 4. My favorite lenses are prime, 35mm 1.4, 50 mm 1.2 and 85 mm 1.8, and the 70-200 mm f/2.8 telephoto zoom is a must have for weddings. I also always have 2 flashes for OCF and a trigger.Feedback
Understand how the sun pose effects a subject at different times of day and different times of the year, and also learn to be ready to fire...learn the controls on your camera and be able to control them without looking at the. Learn manual mode. This photo would not have looked the same in Auto, P or AV mode. When you make the decisions over the camera that is art.
