Like so many islands in the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean, St. Lucia rose up from the sea floor as a volcano. At some time long ago the magma built up enough pressure to explode and tear apart the mountain cone, paving a path to the sea rich in minerals. On the edge of this volcano steam continues to spew out its sulfur-like smoke where, if a person stepped into it, they would burn to death.
