Location
This photo was taken in Door County, Wisconsin, the narrow thumb on the northeast side of the state. The county is reminiscent of New England, attracting tourists and artists and photographers. The road itself was designed by a local artist Jens Jensen, who felt that we needed art even on the roads. Located at the very top of the Peninsula, its main destination is to get the Car Ferry that goes to Washington Island, but has turned out to be a tourist destination and motorcyclists' delight!Time
This was taken on Oct. 1, 2014, about 3:00 in the afternoon. The late afternoon sun brought out all the early fall color in the trees. I prefer to photograph autumn foliage early in the season when the reds appear along with the greens.Lighting
I wanted the curvy portion of the road to be the main emphasis of the image. As I planted my tripod in many places along the road, I shot 50 photos zoomed from 70mm to 200mm. The compression factor of the longest zoom, created the look I wanted.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 7D, using an 18-270 Tamron lens at 200mm. I used evaluative metering, ISO 400, at f16.Inspiration
Having spent a good portion of my summers in Door County, I have shot this numerous times and various hours. This turned out to be my favorite!Editing
It is an HDR image, using three photos at 1/20 sec., 1/40. and 1/80th. I combined them in NIK HDR Efex Pro.In my camera bag
My bag is huge. I carry two camera bodies, 7D and 90D, Canon 430 flash, Canon 100mm macro, Sigma 10-20, Tokina 11-16 f2.8 for night photography, Canon 15-85, and Tamron 18-400. Two tripods and a small stool to sit on while doing wildflowers close to the ground.Feedback
My advice is: Search out iconic places, ask local photographers where and when the best light is for each location. This is a spectacular location for autumn, winter and spring. Not so much for summer.
