Photo was taken in Door County WI. I had noticed the truck during a day shoot and got several that I liked of the flowers in the back of the truck. When our plans failed for a night shoot on Cana Island due to high water levels, I reminded myself of this truck and wondered how it would look with the milky way. It was about 11:00 before the moon set and then we got started.Time
About 11:00 pm. We had to wait until the moon was below the horizon.Lighting
I used an old flashlight (not an LED) and painted the truck for a few seconds with the flashlight. Meanwhile, my friend ran to the back of the truck and used a walmart flashlight with a red gel tip on it to paint the back window.Equipment
Sitting on the ground, with my bogen tripod set very low, I shot this with my Canon 7D and tokina 2.8 lens set at 2.8 and 11 mm. ISO was 2500, Shutter speed 25 seconds. It was summer, the air was very warm, the grass was damp. But who cares!!Inspiration
It was mainly the 'failed' plans to photograph the lighthouse on the island. The causeway was flooded and we decided it was not safe to walk in the dark when we didn't know how deep the water was.Editing
Tons of post processing. Shot in RAW, opened in ACR in Photoshop elements. Mostly working on exposure, opening shadows, adding clarity to show the stars. I used NIK noise reduction in my filter menu and also added some saturation and worked on the levels. In my camera bag
Canon 7D, Canon 15-85 f4-f5.6 IS, Canon 100 f2.8 Macro, Canon 50mm 1.8, Tamron 18-270. I have a Canon 100-400 that I only carry with me when I know I'll be shooting wildlife and/or birds. I also have a Sigma 10-20 that I use for super wide waterscapes with a neutral density filter.Feedback
Door County is a unique place to photograph a variety of scenery: Lighthouses, 300 miles of shoreline, rock bluffs, boats, sunrises and sunsets. I never get tired of it.
