Behind The Lens

Location

Porteau Cove Provincial Park, BC, Canada

Time

Taken on June 5, 2015 at 7:24 PM

Lighting

It was a Summer evening but the sunlight was still quite strong, so I used a fill flash to soften harsh shadows.

Equipment

Nikon D7100 Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 Nikon SB-800 flash

Inspiration

The evening light and the intense, very serious look on the boy's face.

Editing

First I cropped it a bit tighter to bring the focus to those big eyes. Then I converted from colour to black and white (to eliminate the distraction of the bright yellow life jacket the boy was wearing in the boat). Then some contrast and shadow adjustment and just a touch of sharpening.

In my camera bag

I am not a professional and like to travel light, so I usually have just one camera body, 2-3 lenses (depending on where I am going and what I am planning to shoot) and a flash with either a cord or off-camera controller. Also some spare camera batteries and a charger and some small miscellaneous items like lens cleaning cloth, additional flash batteries, etc.

Feedback

Be always ready to capture a candid moment Beware of the light and shadows Get close and/or crop for a tight more personal portrait.
