Behind The Lens

Location

Civic Center San Jose during Fanime 2017

Time

Around 3 in the afternoon

Lighting

I like using this spot for its industrial lighting look. Everything was natural light.

Equipment

Canon 5d mark 3 50mm @ 1/160 f/1.8

Inspiration

Im a big fan of the overwatch series. This cosplayer had an interesting take on his character a hybrid of him with and without his mask. I had a few other poses of him but this one ended up being my favorite.

Editing

Yes I had to do a good amount of color balancing especially with his gloves. The inital photo had them very saturated and I had to balance everything out. I also added some foreground smoke to give the subtly of being in a battle zone.

In my camera bag

5dmk3 50mm, 35 mm some speedlights and a large oblong reflector. Most of this is in a Pelican case.

Feedback

Cosplay conventions happen around the world and almost everyone wants they photo taken. It's a good place for new photographers to network and get practice. Scout out a location you want to shoot first then find a cosplayer who fits the area you want to shoot. Don't be afraid to ask them for a private shoot, just keep it professional. Don't expect the cosplayer to know how to pose. Make sure you have some stock poses on hand or know their character. You get shooting practice, lighting practice, location scouting, networking, directing practice all at a convention.
