I took this photo at the edge of a Golf Course at the Grand Geneva resort in WisconsinTime
I took this photo just after sunrise, literally after rolling out of bed and throwing on a hoodie in order to walk the grounds and explore a little with my camera. The only other “early-birds” out there at this time were the golfers with early tee times!Lighting
The lighting was provided by the recently-risen sunEquipment
I used my Leica V-Lux Type 114, a great bridge camera with a wide range of focal lengths on its built-in lens. Since I wanted to cover a lot of ground and just discover some nice views shortly after sunrise, I didn’t bring a tripod with me.Inspiration
The beauty of Wisconsin inspired me to bring my camera around the gorgeous grounds of the Grand Geneva resort. Even though the Midwest is fairly flat, it is still quite beautiful!Editing
I used Lightroom to enhance the natural light, make the colors of the flowers “pop,” and to achieve the rose-colored appearance of the sky.In my camera bag
I usually take a spare battery or two (great advice from my Dad!), an extra SD card, some neutral density filters (you never know when you might happen upon a waterfall!), a crystal sphere (for creative refraction shots), a remote trigger release, and a lens cleaning cloth. I also bring a pen and notebook to jot down some notes: thoughts on camera settings, reflections on my surroundings, a quick journal entry to capture my emotions at the time, or lists of things to bring on my photography excursions!Feedback
I think it’s always a good idea to have a camera on-hand. I can think of so many times in my daily sojourns - opportunities missed - when I really wished I had my camera to capture a magical moment, a spontaneous occurrence, a momentary expression, a rare angle on an ordinary view, a fleeting moment of perfect lighting, etc. I was fortunate to have my camera with me on a nice weekend retreat to a beautiful Wisconsin resort. Waking up prior to sunrise while on vacation might not be an ideal way to relax, but it afforded me the opportunity to take photos of the scenic surroundings without many other people to contend with. I didn’t know what to expect when I ventured out that morning, but it paid off to have an open mind, a hoodie to keep warm, a camera with ample SD card space, and a healthy sense of adventure!
